EVENT DESCRIPTION:
 
Join the Chicago Midwest Chapter of the National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE) and Malcolm X College, during Black History Month for a virtual film screening of Toxic: A Black Woman’s Story. 
 
Toxic explores multiple inequities beneath infant mortality rates in Black women. It uncovers the microaggressions and multi-layered experiences that are unique to the Black experience in America (Watch the trailer here). The event will include a viewing of the 25-minute film, followed by a moderated panel discussion of Black women who are healthcare providers and executives.

Onna Ford, M.Ed, MSN, APRN
Nursing Admissions Chair
Malcolm X College

 
Onna Ford is a Family Nurse Practitioner and Fulltime Nursing Faculty at Malcolm X College with 29 years of nursing experience.  Onna was born and raised in Chicago.  She is product of Chicago Public Schools and City Colleges of Chicago.  She earned an Associate in Science in Prepharmacy at Olive Harvey College, Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Master of Education in Educational Leadership at Governors State University and Master of Science in Nursing at St. Xavier University.  
Onna is an advocate for health equity.  She was featured in a front-page article “Racism in Medicine” published by The Chicago Tribune newspaper. Onna passes the torch to her prospective nursing students during instruction in Nursing Leadership and Maternal Newborn Nursing. She is a wife and mother of three.  In her spare time, you will find her traveling around the country to accompany her husband as he works as a football referee.  She is a true sports fan and loves watching football, basketball, and boxing.

In her years as CEO, Donna has led ACCESS to become one of the largest federally qualified health center (FQHC) organizations in the country serving a predominate African American and Latinx patient population in 16 of the 20 most underserved communities in Chicago. Donna has led the growth of ACCESS by acquiring and transforming health system and community-based physician primary care practices in Chicago, Cook and DuPage counties. Moving the organization from volume to value-based care to successfully compete in the healthcare environment has required Donna to develop a focus on cultural alignment, physician engagement, technology enhancements, innovative payer partnerships, health system and community-based partnerships.
Strongly believing in an integrative health model that will decrease the barriers to wellness, Donna has successfully led ACCESS through innovative redesign of the delivery system by optimizing the patient experience and embedding practices that address social determinants of health.​

Dr. Erica N. Smith is the Vice Chair of the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology at Highland Park Hospital, NorthShore University Health System and a graduate of Northwestern University and Northwestern University Medical School.
 
She has been an obstetrician/gynecologist for 20 years. Her clinical interests are minimally invasive gynecologic surgery and providing safe and equitable obstetrical care to low and high risk patients.  Her current professional passion is to oversee the coordination and development of strong obstetrical and gynecologic services at Highland Park Hospital. A native Chicagoan, she lives in Glencoe with her husband and her 8 year old boy/girl twins.

Tina Lewis 
Community Affairs Specialist
UIC Mile Square Health Center 
 
Tina Lewis currently serves as a Community Affairs Specialist II with UIC Mile Square Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center located on the University of Illinois campus. Tina’s passion for the community she serves, and as a resident, led her to become an exemplary team member of the Mile Square Health Center family since November 2000.Tina began her career with Mile Square as a community Worker on west side of Chicago at Rockwell Garden Development. 
 
Tina credits her success as the voice and a leader of her community by stepping up and advocating to improve the injustices she saw and experienced: access to care, food insecurity, and access to mental health; disparities that affect the minority communities, especially, communities of color. Tina is the bridge between the community and the healthcare system by educating families on chronic diseases that are, but not limited to, improving birth outcomes for women of color, improving hypertension, managing diabetes, educating on the importance of mammograms, and prostate cancer in males. 
 
Tina philosophy is if health care could be viewed through the eyes of the Community, health outcomes can and will be achieved.

Juton Strickland
Emergency Services Counselor

When people experience trauma or stressors in their lives, it is not common for things to fall apart. Juton’s greatest passion is bringing healing to people who struggle with mental health issues. Her first in-depth look at mental health came as a High School Counselor in Alternative School settings. What society called “bad behavior” was driven by past failures of parenting, schools, and communities. This is when her career shift happened.  Juton’s goal is to help individuals and families find healthy perceptions of themselves and strengthen their relationships so they can begin to see and know themselves as peaceful, complete, whole, and safe. Juton believe everyone should have a safe and healing place to work
Most of her 15+ year career has been spent working with youth and their families through school and community-based therapy programs.  Juton works from a collaborative, strengths-based approach, assisting and supporting clients to be the author of their own lives.  She works with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, disruptive behaviors, relationship challenges, self-esteem, and trauma.
Her educational background includes MA in Counseling Psychology from Trinity Christian College, 2020 and in 2023 Ed. D in Counseling and Supervision from National Louis University. She also received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree from Trinity Christian College. She is also a member of the illustrious Zeta Phi Beta, Inc Sorority.  Amid the serious work of therapy, Juton seeks to find hope, joy, and humor –and a renewed enthusiasm for life.

Brandon A. Buchanan, FACHE (moderator)
Director, Health Equity
NorthShore University HealthSystem

 
Brandon A. Buchanan, FACHE is a writer, mentor, and community health advocate. He is passionate about building relationships with underserved communities and understanding their barriers to accessing high-quality and coordinated care. As Director, Health Equity at NorthShore University HealthSystem, Brandon is responsible for promoting the vision of health equity and developing interventions to eliminate health disparities. He is a critical leader in NorthShore’s Black Leadership Forum and has been instrumental in advancing key efforts to expand perspectives across the organization.

Brandon graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science in Community Health, earned a Master of Health Administration from The Ohio State University, and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. In his free time, he enjoys writing and collecting postcards with his husband, Joe. He also is an advocate of mentorship and actively encourages Black youth to pursue healthcare related fields.
